Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
for the rain to gather
for the wind to suck
for the sun to rot
for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

 

남부의 나무에는 이상한 열매가 열린다.

잎사귀와 뿌리에는 피가 흥건하고,

남부의 따뜻한 산들 바람에

검은 몸뚱이들이 매달린 채 흔들린다.

포플러나무에 매달려 있는 이상한 열매들.

 

멋진 남부의 전원 풍경,

튀어나온 눈과 찌그러진 입술,

달콤하고 상쾌한 매그놀리아 향,

그리고는 갑자기 풍겨오는, 살덩이를 태우는 냄새여!

 

여기 까마귀들이 뜯어먹고,

비를 모으며 바람을 빨아들이는,

그리고 햇살에 썩어가고 나무에서 떨어질,

여기 이상하고 슬픈 열매가 있다.

 

침울하고 기괴한 분위기의 이곡은 백인 인종차별집단 KKK에 의해

나무에 목매달려 썩어가는 흑인들의 주검을 보며

유대계 백인 교사 아벨 미어로풀 Abel Meeropol 이 만들었고 

빌리 할러데이 Billie Holiday가 불렀다.
